Thanksgiving! It’s one of those celebrations that nowadays truly revolves around a single meal.
And, where there are festivities and food, wine can’t be too far behind. Here are few suggestions if you’re looking for the perfect grapes to go with your grub.
This one is a traditional Thanksgiving favorite for good reason. It is fruity and light-bodied enough to provide a refreshing counterpoint to turkey and herbal flavors, (and have you quaffing for the duration of dinner). But, it’s also bold and acidic enough to cut through the richer flavors that surround it.
Syrah / Shiraz
It wouldn’t be right to talk about wine pairings for this most American of holidays without mentioning one of America’s favorites. The grape’s fruity, low tannin character makes it moist enough to balance out what has a tendency to be one of the drier meats.
If you’re craving a white wine with Thanksgiving, there are many worse choices that you could make than a Gruner Veltliner. It usually embodies a drier style, with an exceptionally high acidity that can cut through the rich creaminess of many traditional Thanksgiving dishes. It can stand up to turkey without much trouble too.
It’s true; dry rosé wines in particular are versatile when it comes to pairing. They are particularly well suited to pork; perfect for that big ol’ roast ham. Throw some autumnal and winter vegetables in to the mix and they’ll rub up pretty well against them, too.
Thanksgiving is a celebration after all, right? We’ll leave this one up to you; a sparkling aperitif is down to taste, whether you want to liven things up with Prosecco or splurge on Champagne. And if you’re drinking before dinner, you don’t need to worry about pairing too much… just concern yourself with getting festive.
