Six Women that Changed the Way We Drink

With International Women’s Day just around the corner, we thought we’d take the time to shout out a very small selection of the women that have changed our industry and the world. These women – from business leaders to bartenders to bootleggers – changed the way we drink, and we think they don’t get the credit they deserve.

Let’s change that.

Barbe-Nicole Clicquot |
Champagne legend /

Barbe-Nicole Clicquot was 27 years old when her husband and father to her three year old daughter, heir to a Champagne dynasty, passed away and she defied public opinion to take over the business. It was her that made Veuve Clicquot Champagne (veuve means “widow” in French) the world-renowned brand it is now. She even invented the process of riddling to rid Champagne of yeast, which is still used today.

Her other inventions include the first known vintage and rosé Champagnes. She has been called “the first businesswoman in France, and maybe the first in Europe”. Clicquot and other Champagne widows (more on them later) became so well-regarded that other Champagne houses started adding “Veuve” to their names, even when there was no widow involved at all.

Ada Coleman |
Bartending trailblazer /

Given the way that women are killing it in the bar industry in 2019, its hard to believe that there was a time when female mixologists were almost unheard of. Ada Coleman changed that. After mixing her first cocktail in 1899 (a Manhattan, she later recalled in an interview), she eventually worked her way up to Head Bartender at the legendary American Bar, in London’s The Savoy Hotel. She was a legend even in her own time, known to drinkers around the world even beyond her retirement in 1925.

“Moonshine Mary” & Stella Beloumant |
Bootleg

The Prohibition-era in the U.S. – the period during which a constitutional ban on alcohol was enacted throughout America from 1920 to 1933 – usually conjures up images of mobsters and grizzled policemen. But a handful of enterprising women got in on the act too. Figures like the notorious “Moonshine Mary” Wazeniak, running a speakeasy from her home, and Stella Beloumant, who ran one of Nevada’s largest bootlegging operations and was eventually caught with 820 gallons of illegal booze (the equivalent of 4,140 bottles of wine), flipped gender roles in a world and era where that seldom happened, even if they were on the wrong side of the law.

Marie-Louise Lanson de Nonancourt |
Visionary of Laurent Perrier /

Another of the “Champagne widows”, Marie-Louise’s husband died during World War I. Years later, in 1938, she decided to gamble her success by leaving her established family firm (Lanson Père et Fils, at the time one of Champagne’s most famous houses) to purchase another house that was on the verge of bankruptcy. The name of that run-down Champagne house? Laurent Perrier. Nonancourt’s dedication turned it into the phenomenal success that it is today, and her descendants – sisters Alexandra Pereyre de Nonancourt and Stéphanie Meneux de Nonancourt – are still on board.

Valentine Goesaert & Anne Davidow |
Freedom Fighters /

After Prohibition, alcohol was once again freely consumed – but the laws governing it remained strict, and in some states women were literally barred from tending bars. Valentine Goesaert, a bar owner from Michigan, U.S., set out to change these horrendously discriminatory laws with the help of lawyer Anna Davidow, standing in front of the Supreme Court in 1947. Unfortunately, the court ultimately ruled against the pair. Their influence, however, can’t be understated in the story of gender equality in the bar industry.

Louise Pommery |
Dry Champagne /

Jeanne Alexandrine Loise Pommery is credited with being pretty much responsible for the taste of the Champagne we love so much. She is credited with inventing the world’s first brut Champagne, i.e. the dry Champagne that we are familiar with nowadays. She did so at the request of another historical important woman – Queen Victoria, a top client of both Veuve Clicquot and Veuve Pommery who had a weakness for the bubbly stuff but wanted something less sweet. To understand how revolutionary that is, think about Champagne today – and think about how often fashion and taste dictates we go for something dry.
