Shanghai | Four White Wines that are Perfect for Winter

We all know the rule of thumb. Summer is the time to sip chilled white wines; winter is when we hunker down and start quaffing the red.

But rules are made to be broken! There are, in fact, a number of white wines that you’ll find are perfect for enjoying in winter. But which ones are they?

Chardonnay

If this question has a single right answer, it’s probably a Chardonnay from Burgundy. Classic, oak-aged Chardonnays are known for being full, robust and buttery rather than light and crisp, which makes them a perfect white wine for enjoying over the colder months. Plus, it pairs great with the rich holiday foods you’re probably going to be stuffing yourself with.

Try ours:
2012 Domaine Faiveley Chardonnay (RMB 215)
2014 Henri Darnat “La Jumalie” Chardonnay (RMB 240 – available now as a Limited Edition special)

Riesling

Rieslings, particularly dry or off-dry German ones, are worth reaching for in the winter. For one thing, they are exceptionally versatile and will pair with a great many foods at a time when we all eat a little more than we would usually. In addition, it’s home turf between dry and sweet just hits the right notes even in cooler weather.

Try ours:
2014 Heinz Schmitt Erben Riesling (RMB 145)

Rhône Valley Whites

France’s Côtes du Rhône produces some of the best white wines that you could hope to drink in winter. Often blends of grapes like Grenache, Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier, they are rounded, often vibrantly fruity and just a little spicy. All characteristics that make them a nice complement for cooler weather.

Try ours:
2015 Famille Perrin Côtes ru Rhône Réserve Blanc (RMB 150)

Sweet/Noble Riesling

Almond dessert with glass of sweet wine

If you remain unconvinced that a white wine will do it for you in winter, this might do the trick. Sweet (or dessert) wines, made from grapes that have been infected with noble rot, are smooth, rich and indulgent; a joy to drink, especially when the cold weather outside calls for a treat and some time indoors. They also pair with decadent desserts, and who doesn’t want an excuse to eat more dessert at this time of year?

Try ours:
2006 Heinz Schmitt Riesling Beerenauslese

Try any of these in the cold winter months and you might be pleasantly surprised. Who said winter had to be grey?
